Today 8th April 2010, Apple unveiled plans for the biggest and most exciting iPhone software update yet. iPhone OS 4 will include over 100 new user features for iPhone and iPod touch owners to enjoy.
multi-tasking. With iPhone OS 4.0 you will be able to run multiple applications at the same time, including the likes of streaming music apps such as Spotify, VoIP such as Skype and sat nav programmes like TomTom. These can be switched between by double tapping the home button which brings up the icons of all the apps currently in use.
folders. iPhone apps are getting out of control with pages and pages of them filling up most user’s handsets, you can group them together. In OS 4.0 simply drag one app onto another and it automatically creates a folder. This folder can then be renamed: business applications, messaging. You can now have up to 2160 apps at once — many more than the current limit of 180 apps.
Unified Messaging, we at last get support for multiple Exchange accounts (this will be ahead of the current Windows Mobile phones and Blackberry’s), SSL VPN, and a unified inbox which can group mail by conversation thread (very much like the Gmail application). Fast switching between accounts will be introduced for those who wish to keep their different email addresses separate.
ibooks, take your favourite book with you, Easily flip through the pages of a book you’ve downloaded from the iBookstore while listening to your music collection.
There will be no multi-tasking in iPhone OS 4.0 for the iPhone 3G and second generation iPod touch. First generation iPhone and iPod touches won’t be compatible at all.
